  • Slowly add water, mixing as you go until you get a slightly runny mixture.

  • Add plastic bugs.

  • Encourage the children to put their hands into the tub and feel around for the bugs.

  • Have fun!

Notes:

Great for small world play - add additional items like trucks or swap bugs with animals etc to replicate farm or dinosaurs.

Benefits:

Sensory activities like this are so great for children of all ages! They allow children to learn and create in a safe, stimulating play environment. Children learn so much by playing with their surroundings.

Ways to adapt:

  • We love getting kids into the kitchen. They learn so much by ‘helping’ prepare food. It’s the perfect opportunity for your kids to explore measuring and pouring with you – and gain early mathematical skills at the same time!

  • None of the measurements need to be exact – you just need a big container for the mixing, so kids have a less likely chance of spilling the contents everywhere.

  • Foil bowls are a clever idea because you can throw them out at the end of the activity. Easy clean-up is always a bonus. Time to get the kids mixing up the ‘mud’.
