Montessori Activities: Land and Sea Sorting

OVERVIEW

Prep time: 5 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Estimated Cost: Various

Mess level: Medium

What you need

You can use whatever you have at the home, here is what I have used for inspiration:

  • Tray

  • Bowls to place the animals

  • Sea animals

  • Play-dough

  • Styrofoam

  • Birds

  • Water beads (green and blue)

  • Sand

  • Seashells

  • Coconut trees

Instructions:

Have the setup done in advance and then ask your little one to place the various items where they think they should go, ie on the land or sea.

Benefits:

A wonderful and engaging activity - playing and learning at the same time. Learning the names of some of these animals as well as this being a Montessori early geography activity,

Ways to adapt:

  • You can rotate in new animals to freshen up the activity or add modes of transport for sorting such as an airplane, boat, car.

  • This activity easily leads to animal study, specifically the study of feathers, fur, and scales.

Tips:

Make sure the activity makes sense by using the right animals/objects in the right setting, for example, if the water is the sea don't add something that is only fond in a lake or pond.
