What you need
You can use whatever you have at the home, here is what I have used for inspiration:
Tray
Bowls to place the animals
Sea animals
Play-dough
Styrofoam
Birds
Water beads (green and blue)
Sand
Seashells
Coconut trees
Instructions:
Have the setup done in advance and then ask your little one to place the various items where they think they should go, ie on the land or sea.
Benefits:
A wonderful and engaging activity - playing and learning at the same time. Learning the names of some of these animals as well as this being a Montessori early geography activity,
Ways to adapt:
You can rotate in new animals to freshen up the activity or add modes of transport for sorting such as an airplane, boat, car.
This activity easily leads to animal study, specifically the study of feathers, fur, and scales.
Tips:
Make sure the activity makes sense by using the right animals/objects in the right setting, for example, if the water is the sea don't add something that is only fond in a lake or pond.
