Sensory play focuses on experiences that engage one or more of the senses. Children may explore different textures, temperatures, colours, sounds, movements and materials while playing. There is no single “right” way to take part — the value comes from experimenting, discovering and following their own curiosity.

What is it

Sensory experiences help children understand how the world around them works. Through pouring, squeezing, scooping, sorting, mixing and manipulating materials, children are developing skills while also enjoying open-ended play. Sensory play can encourage concentration, problem-solving, independence and confidence.
